Tel Aviv Diary

The group arrived in Tel Aviv-Jaffa on Tuesday June 7, and their first stop was the home of Dr. Rachel Korazim in Jaffa, where they read and discussed Israeli and Palestinian poetry together. The students said goodbye to Prof. Lefkovitz and Dr. Gordon and hello to Prof. Rabinovitch at a sunset dinner at Tel Aviv’s refurbished port (the Namal).

On Wednesday June 8 in the morning, students had an overview class on Israel’s legal history with Prof. Rabinovitch, and in the afternoon they visited Doris Hiffawi’s home in Jaffa to have coffee and hear about her childhood, upbringing, marriage, and life in Jaffa. Doris is quite an entertainer–the dancing was lively!

The theme of the course in Tel Aviv is Israel’s religions and the law. The closest beach to the hotel is an enclosed area maintained by the city for people who for religious reasons only bathe with people of their own sex. The beach alternates days for men and women.
